My 6'4" weightlifting son used to live and work in SF (near Coit Tower) during summers in college, and he carried a knife to work because he didn't feel particularly safe.
Today, 10 years later, he says it's not too bad. He lives a block from Ghirardelli Square, so...nicer neighborhood. But he's not moving any time soon.
