One million dollars
Wait, that's just one player in a non-revenue sport.
It will cost a lot. These are good questions being asked. What are the alternatives to paying market rate for competitive teams in the competitive conference in which Stanford chose to compete? (Not to mention chose to subsidize.) Are those alternatives worth the savings? Stanford has more money than most if they want to spend it. What are the alternatives to paying what is necessary?
Getting teeth kicked in consistently on national TV. Losers. Is that good for the brand?
Further loss of fan and alumni engagement, although how much emptier can it get? Lost opportunities for donations. Do they matter in the grand scheme?
Can Stanford really afford a luxurious athletic department without FBS football? Without P4 football?
What do you do with a stadium that is used once a year?
Correlation is not causation, but this full-on NIL/portal year has been wild. Vandy looks better than Bama. Army and Navy are on a collision course to run the table. Florida State sucks. Football teams are still made up of kids barely out of high school. Maybe this opens things up for those willing to pay. The days of stockpiling talent are long gone.
Good coaches and good players. The formula is not difficult. It just worked at Stanford for almost a full decade.
