So the term Hail Marry is recent ?  But the pass isn’t

Term was first used in the huddle by Notre Dame players vs. Georgia Tech in 1922 when they literally said the prayer. It succeeded 2x in a row, both from the 6 yard line. Elmer Layden was in that huddle, brought it up with reporters when he was coaching in 1935. Georgetown used it in 1941 Orange Bowl.

Then it was popularized by Roger Staubach, a Catholic, in a 1963 game vs. Michigan. He used the term and used it again 12 years later when he and Drew Pearson connected late in a game and it caught on.
