Thought you might find this interesting. It's a newspaper account of the Stanford vs. Chicago game from the Daily Inter Ocean, which I gather was a Chicago area periodical. These 100+ year-old articles always reveal something interesting from the time period. For example, Chicago's quarterback, Frank Hering, thought the referee was favoring Stanford...so he punched him. And the referee -- who doubled as the coach of Reliance AC in San Francisco punched him back. Police intervened, the game went on. Stanford lost that game, but won the next game vs. Chicago four days later, and Reliance AC beat Chicago three days after that game.

The QB, Frank Hering, later went to law school. He coached Notre Dame's football, basketball and baseball teams for a few years, and is known as the "Father of Notre Dame football" because he transformed football from an intramural sport to a varsity sport. He also established a community center for African American people.

And he invented Mother's Day. No kidding.
