And if schools haven’t lost half the team to the transfer portal.

Honestly, it is kind of dumb to open the transfer portal before the end of the season.
BC
well the end of this season is 20 Jan 2025 so not allowing transfers until after that date would likely stop enrollment in January for transfers (which will not happen)...but if they could not be enrolled for the semester/quarter that starts in Jan it could be an advantage for quarter schools where they could enroll for spring quarter.....
and Oklahoma did play their game with 20+ players having entered the portal
and then there is Cam Ward who apparently opted out at halftime of the UM/ISU game....after setting the career TD passing record....
which gets back to the question of how long will ESPN find bowl games to be a viable/profitable content option in December?
Content is king and live sports are the most popular content available on television. It is really that simple. The first week of bowl games averaged 1.234 million viewers. Considering those five games featured the dregs of those qualifying for a bowl, that tells me there is a big appetite for televised football regardless of the quality.
College football is booming and the bowl games are part of that boom. Even with CFP expansion, I don’t foresee any significant reduction in the overall number of bowl games.
