If you listen to some people here, you should instead donate to Lifetime Cardinal rather than buy the Lambo. I think maybe that's the issue, a lot of Stanford fans want to do things with their money other than throw it at recruits. Doesn't make for good football in this age.
I don't know why USC, with all the right ingredients, hasn't been as successful as Notre Shame. But I don't think that's proof that talent+money+coaching aren't necessary!
Agreed with all the endowment blathering: endowments are by definition not to be touched and to only fund specific purposes. And let's not keep confusing the general university endowment with any endowments specific to the athletic department, much less specific teams.
People will donate to coaches and teams in whom they believe. Mack Brown got by on that for a while. I'm not sure Stanford pulls in a ton of donations in this current state of non-winning. A successful AD can also curry favor with boosters and rack up the donations, but I don't see a lot of new donors being cultivated in that way right now (hope I'm wrong). Money tends to follow wins.
