However, IMO we can get a pretty good idea of an upper bound on how many students are "interested in football". Look at student attendance at the games. The lack thereof speaks for itself. I say the attendance is an upper bound because some subset of those students who do attend do so for social reasons, not because they are interested in football. Back "in the day" well over half the students attending fell into that category. No idea what it is today, but whatever it is reduces the actual number of attendees that are there for football reasons.
I guess it is always possible that most Stanford students are rabid football fans but prefer to watch the game on TV. Doing so may make sense in that the TV cameras arguably give you a better view of all the action as well as instant replay.
