while attendance was much better in the Rose/Orange/Fiesta bowl years let's not forget that for an awful lot of the "less interesting games" (e.g., OSU, WSU, UA, ASU, CU, UU, home games labor day weekend, and many non-conference games) the actual attendance in the stadium was still probably 25k-35k so I think the bandwagon fans outnumber the fans waiting for the team to be good.

Absolutely, I was trying to be generous.  This board is very under representative of the Stanford community at large, which in many ways, is the anti-SEC: "it just doesn't mean that much".
