Extending BC's comment regarding Bay Area interest in (American) football:  The Census Bureau reports that 42.2% of the residents of Santa Clara County are foreign-born.   10.6% of the Notre Dame Census Designated Place are foreign-born.   I'm sure there are foreign-born residents that acquire an interest in American football, but probably considerably fewer than US-born residents that grew up with football.
