I don't doubt that Spurrier has done a lot of things in football. But he last coached college ball in 2015. That's ten years ago. The scope of college ball is way beyond 2015 now. At 79 yrs old, I don't see how he holds appeal to the modern college recruit. JH and DS -- much younger, and relatable to the players. Right now in an era where every coach has to re-recruit the entire team back each season...I just don't know. It would just look back to hire a man who's been away from college football for a decade.
As AD, he is unfamiliar with an institution that does not hold football as one of its primary motivations. In fact, the student body is famously so focused on achievement that if the football team does not achieve, then the students have their own achievements to work toward, and their attention will be directed thusly. He won't be used to working in a university that doesn't live in the southeast culture of sports. He probably hasn't had to answer to university officials in ten years either, much less a GM by the name of Andrew Luck.
The man can be venerated for his lifetime's worth of achievements in football, but it was a different world of football, and Stanford should look toward the future (while figuring out what role football should play in the university's future).
