Two other options:
1) The people who booked Coldplay (events schedulers) were either unaware that softball would playing in the stadium or unaware of the possibility of a post-season at home.  Just because somebody knew, doesn't mean that the appropriate people knew.

2) Everyone was aware, and a decision to book Coldplay with the resultant payday outweighed the benefits to softball hosting once you account for the probability that Stanford would host (or even maybe not even accounting for that).

I mean, it's not like the athletic department is swimming in money since we've moved to the ACC and the resulting reduced payout.  The revenue from the Coldplay concerts may have been necessary to offset the department's deficit, even if it adversely affects the softball team. We also decided to move to the ACC even though the travel schedule also adversely affects the teams in the new league.
