You're absolutely correct it's cleaner -- but we're decades into the various fuzzy gray areas between amateurism and professionalism, (e.g. just look at pro athletes competing in the Olympics). So I think upholding a "clean" ideal is just that -- an ideal, sadly not anywhere near the current reality.

Let's just hope we can play catch-up ball long and well enough to stay relevant.
