I wonder if the issue of the athletic department getting involved with private equity had/has any bearing on the selection of the AD.

It is hard to see a fit at Stanford. No other school has taken the leap yet. Maybe at the conference level media or other commercial activities would be a fit.
It strikes me that a really strong businessperson could deal with the combination of factors that ail Stanford athletics.
