I was one of those aforementioned transfers from a community college, and my year (admit spring 2003), we had a roughly 90 strong transfer class. It's telling they said about 1/3 came from community colleges, which seems even higher than the percentage in my class.
Having watched this number closely for many years, it's so variable an unfortunately the dependant variable is frosh yield. As paloalto noted, when we kill it at admit weekend we have historically decimated the transfer admissions numbers.
That said, I'm sure Athletics is *a* causal factor, but I'm just flagging this is not unprecedented, all time.
my class ('82) had ~200 transfers in (no idea of the net number of transfers in minus transfer out but our graduating class was about the same size as the admitted class, so likely a similar number of transfers out), my estimate of transfers in is based on info from the SAA at our 35th reunion, which I'm pretty sure was based on SAA records for people with '82 as their undergrad social class who had no frosh dorm in the SAA records, which is likely not 100% accurate. No idea on the current net transfer rate (in minus out).
I assume the 90 transfers in this year is for those starting in Sept so any athletes who started in say Jan for football, or who are grad transfers, or post baccalaureate would be in addition to the 90.
