On Gruden, I wouldn't read anything into the box openings. I watched one other school's box opening. Very similar. Lots of enthusiasm for the school in the box. He does enough research on history to make the enthusiasm sound legit. It's low cost branding for the schools. For Gruden it is probably 'remember me' to get back into broadcasting, or he monetizes the views, or maybe he really is just collecting merch from as many places as will send it to him. He's opened boxes from the Broncos, Giants, and Bucs, Udub, Wazzou, Notre Dame, Utah, North Dakota State, and Pacific, which I don't even think plays football these days.
The kind of coach Stanford wants thinks he can win a national title here. Why not? UVA has a really good chance to make the CFP this year and they looked an awful lot like Stanford the past few seasons. Lost. That's what Luck can sell along with all the heavy lifting he (Luck) will be doing to allow the coach to do all the coaching. A Walsh II or any other coach might not find it as "hard" if Luck does the "hard" parts or farms them out to others.
Why would any coach come here? Money and opportunity. Compared to thousands of ongoing opportunities for accountants, doctors, lawyers and engineers, there are still only 136 D1 FBS head coaching jobs in all the land.
The competitive market is bonkers this time around with so many in-season sackings and high-end coach availability. Would be interesting to know Luck's process and how he has pivoted, if at all. Wonder if he was always going to wait until the end of the season in January.
