At SCU, they published the overall student body GPA at 2.68 after my frosh year in 1980/1981. I distinctly remember thinking that if I'd known what the average GPA was in 1979/80, I wouldn't have even applied to the stupid place...
My oldest son was at Princeton during their period of official, formal, curve-forced grade deflation (2000-2014). Apparently Princeton stopped when (a) the other Ivies refused to match, and (b) employers rejected the "3.2-at-Princton-is-the-same-as-3.8-at-Yale" trope. It cost Princetonians numerous opportunities. Only 5% of students and 6% of faculty thought it was effective. Last year, 2/3rds of Princeton grades were A-, A, or A+.
