Alabama fans would not like their school called University of Stanford or Stanford University, because their school is the University of Alabama, any more than Stanford fans would like their school called University of Harvard (or Harvard University, for that matter).  Whether Stanford fans would be bothered by the school being called “University of Stanford” is another question.
