Texas Tech had a much shorter timeline than an NFL team will. They only had to get him through the one year. I am guessing that for whatever reason they thought the NCAA wouldn't actually ban him and that Texas Tech could slow-walk the process long enough to get him through the year. That didn't work because the situation was "worse" than Texas Tech appreciated. I wonder whether Sorsby wasn't fully forthcoming with Texas Tech about what he had done or if Texas Tech simply didn't exercise due diligence. In either case Texas Tech was guilty of massive wishful thinking. An actual ban was just too hard to work-around, certainly PR wise and very probably legally, even for a year.
 
NFL teams OTOH undoubtedly don't expect Sorsby will play his rookie season. He actually has less game experience than many QBs who have only played three years in college. Sorsby will have to stay out of trouble and actually earn his spot. He is not a "short term rental". I tend to agree that he will be drafted but if so there will be no guaranteed money on the table. It also wouldn't surprise me at all if he weren't drafted. There are probably teams willing to look at him as an UDFA because that costs them only the time they spend trying to make an asset out of him. Using a draft pick OTOH gives up another potential player. Given where Sorsby is in his development and with his additional baggage it is arguably not worth it.

The NFL CBA includes a guarantee for all players selected in the NFL Draft. For example, a player drafted in the middle of the third round receives a bonus of approximately $1.5M.
