Stanford dropped the requirement in 2020 and reinstated it in 2024 for the 2025 admissions cycle.
I hope the UC system does reinstate it, though I doubt it will happen anytime soon. It's really the only universal objective measurement. Essays and extracurriculars can be BS'd. Grading standards vary widely across high schools.
