I hope this stems the redshirting of kids to make them more competitive in sports.  It seems like over half the varsity athletes at private schools in New England got reclassed.  It's one of the reasons I want to keep my son in public school.

One of my son's BFF's father is a fellow immigrant kid that grew up in England.  He asked me about this phenomenon "Why do people do this?  It's so shameful to be held back."  My reply "I imagine rich people in England are like the ones here in this regard.  They have no shame.

Getting held back a year is one of the best examples of horse shoe theory when it comes to the rich and the poor as in "classy if rich, trashy if poor".

Haven't been held back, but both my father-in-law (Stanford BS '57, MS '59, basketball player and NASA scientist) and I were skipped a grade in grade school. We both agreed that if there one "do over" in life we could have, it would be to take that decision back. Tough being the youngest boy in a class.
