I'm not privy to seeing or knowing what's going on in practices and training, but of course immediately think of S&C.
Again, not aware of details, but I would be interested to know how much of the "C" of that includes meaningful and serious (not token) stretching.
I've seen in sports before where strength is overemphasized compared to flexibility.
I think this is more likely to lead to muscle/ligament/soft tissue injuries when muscles tightened from strengthening, but not kept loose and elastic enough from serious stretching, are put into contorted positions, inevitable in many sports especially football.
Then you get a muscle tear. And you're out.
Again, I don't know if that is what is going on here, not implying that it is, not even sure how many injuries are muscle tear related.
But I've seen it happen elsewhere and in other sports too, baseball and swimming for example.
Football dudes might not wanna consider it, but I'm talking serious stretching such as done in pilates, ballet, yoga.
Let me put it another way: 10 minutes stretching may be as, or more, important than 10 min lifting.
Ran track in HS, coached by one of SJSU's "Speed City" sprinters -- not Carlos or Smith, but was on the 4x100 relay team with them. We stretched for 20 minutes every day, never had an injury in track. Played volleyball in college, stretched 20 minutes a day, and VB is a sport with numerous joint injuries...never had one. Played football and basketball in HS, stretched for five minutes a day...many injuries, both sports.
I think there's something to it.
