What a zinger of an insight. Nike was a market-maker (taste-maker of sorts), and data-driven decisions would not serve that role. "Easier to be measured" sounds like someone beholden to a board of directors or higher-ups. When you're a cultural leader, you just have to know what to do ("be right, often" and "bias for action").
I was part of the channel vs direct sales changes at a large PC maker. Back then everyone wanted to be like Dell (who was 100% direct sales back then) because they had better margins. Well making the change is challenging without losing your current channel sales. While we were slowly shifting some sales to direct what was Dell doing? They started selling through the channel as many customers wanted to buy that way.....buying a PC without seeing, using or touching it is easier than buying shoes you have never tried on....
