Knowing that you have an accurate passer at #2 could give the coaching staff confidence to put more emphasis on the passing game. If #1 goes down, you don't need to change the game plan to fit #2's ability. This was not the case with Nunes and Nottingham as backups.
That said, next year's offensive line should reduce the possibility of an injury to all quarterbacks.
