Quote:I think it was more about giving the northern schools annual or at least bi-annual access to the LA recruiting market. The compromise was allowing Stanford and Kal to maintain their SoCal rivalries.
Mathematically, the Oregon and Washington schools would have had more visits to SoCal had they allowed the Cali schools to be in one division with no guarantee cross-rivarlies.
Current schedule: 2 trips to SoCal every 4 years 0.5 per year
Cali schools + AZ schools: 4 trips to SoCal every 6 years. -- 0.67 per year
Of course, the current schedule guarantees a trip to NorCal every year. So if you think trips to CA is the most important metric:
Current schedule: 6 trips to CA every 4 years 1.5 per year
Cali schools + AZ schools: 6 trips to CA every 6 years 1.0 per year
So, WA and OR maximized their exposure to CA, but reduced their exposure to SoCal.
This all raises another interesting hole in Miller's argument that the guarantee weekenders is bad for the Cali schools. Either exposure to SoCal is a good thing and worth having to play "more difficult games" or it's better to play patsies and not get on TV. I think Miller would agree that being on TV and accessing the SoCal recruits is a good thing for a program, so having more of it, on the margin, is a good thing.
