It's the study of communication, including communication research. One of the classes concerned techniques used to observe, measure, and study the effects of communication. So, for instance, one of the most well-known current comm department faculty members is Cliff Nass, who studies how we interact with technology, how using technology affects our brain, and how we relate to one another in technology.
When I was in school, one of the professors whose name escapes me studied communication and children. They actually perceive information on television differently than adults. A few years later, the same professor was involved in developing a rating system for video games.
