Predictions are hard, especially about the future. And they're (relatively) common, as well. In general, you can spot players' talent early, but exceptions occur often enough that it's hard to get too surprised when they do occur. Brady in the sixth round -- apparently evaluators found it difficult to distinguish one of the great quarterbacks ever from Spergon Wynn.
There's also the counterfactual. Who's to say if Crist went to Stanford instead of N.D., and Luck to Purdue (or somewhere), that the situations would be reversed to an extent -- that Luck would labor under the undistinguished Danny Hope, with no talent and worse coaching, while Crist bloomed under Harbaugh/Shaw? No one knows.
