Good to see this thread regress back to the 60's. My daughters (aged 16 and 20) could comment very intelligently on the original thread, but I am clueless as to what they music they listen to these days as it is always by earphone rather than communal audio. As for me, I am still stuck in the 60's, partly because the 70's were such crap, but mostly because the 60's were when and where I grew up, musically and otherwise, firstly in MadMen country (Fairfield County, CT) and then at Stanford, but most importantly at Stanford in Britain I, Harlaxton Manor, in the first 6 months of 1966.
A few weeks after we had landed in Maggie Thatcher country (Grantham, Lincs), a few of us decided to go down the the local armory where a band we had never heard of was playing. It was Them, with Van Morrison et. al. singing "G-L-O-R-I-A" in what was still a post-apocolyptic England. A few weeks later we went to the same place to see the Kinks. A few months later we all went on a school trip to Rome and my then girlfriend and I spent an evening at the Piper Club dancing to the Who's 1st album, and a few weeks later we saw them play live in Leicester. A few weeks after that I heard "Wild Thing" for the first time in the back seat of a Rolls Royce with the peaches and cream daughter of one of my father's business associates. She was dismissive and even disgusted. When I got back to Harlaxton, my girlfriend and I drove to Nottingham to buy one of the first available 45's of that great Troggs song.
I spent a lot of 67 and 68 at the Fillmore and Winterland and wangled a weekend pass to Woodstock while on active duty in the US Army in DC. Saw the Who many times in the 69-71 period, but with the emergence of Disco, all had changed, changed utterly, and this time it was a terribly ugliness which had been born........
