I did get a bit of the undercurrent of financial stress, especially from the dad's comments, which suggested that he was worried that if Vecchio didn't play football the family would be screwed financially.

That's unfortunate, because if the family made less than $60,000 a year they wouldn't have to pay anything based on basic Stanford financial aid, whereas if the family made less than $100,000 a year, they wouldn't have to pay tuition.
