Tedford was pretty good until he signed his undeserved, and mind-bendingly irresponsible (for UC) contract extension at the end of the 2008 season that guaranteed seven years at nearly $3 million per. He was like a an MLB or NBA player signing the windfall deal and getting fat.
WIM, the roster was a disaster. Sure there were some talented guys like Chris Harper and Bryce Treggs, but how much are WRs going to help when the OL is impotent? It was too small inexperienced if talented, and too big and slow if experienced. OC Tony Franklin admitted he was afraid to call runs last year because he knew they wouldn't work. At least with a pass, there was a chance something good could happen.Â
Many guys quit and the injuries were crushing. I know one guy who quit mid-season because he just really didn't care about football much. He's not alone. Then there were guys who did have passion for football but don't have it for school. Guys who were into both football and school had a terrible S&C program and bad practice habits. The roster might not have been that bad in terms of recruiting rankings, but the players simply weren't developed, so the roster was a lot worse than it might have appeared from the outside.
Stanford doesn't have all these problems because the vetting process that tough admissions standards creates, prevents all of them from materializing.
