My plentiful criticisms of playcalling have all been focused in one area:  What does Shaw do to CHANGE the gameplan when the one he had going in DOESN'T WORK???

That's not really play calling as I understand the term.

Play calling is a play to play instant decision on what to do next.

Adjustments are a broader strategy issue, really more akin to game planning - as every game plan ought to have a "Step 2 - what next if approach #1 doesn't work or the defense adjusts".

I agree that Stanford did not always do well on the "Step 2" front.

However, I more or less agree with WIM that fans tend to make too much of play calling. It seems to be the #1 complaint of every fan base in the country. Certainly most coaching staffs make bad play calls, but it is not possible for most coaching staffs to be the worst in their league at play calling.
