The 'Niner D was, by and large, excellent.  It's very hard to contain Murray, particularly when you're on the field for a majority of the plays (and when other side is running hurry up).  They had one notable breakdown on the last TD; but that happens from time to time (see killer 3rd and 15 completion in SB last year).

On O, Jimmy G. missed some passes.  But I don't know why anyone would think that playing pre-season games would have fixed that.  The guy has missed a lot of important passes in his 'Niner career.  Again, in SB, with all those season games under his belt, he had his 2nd and 5 pass deflected at LOS (pump fake or look away, anyone?) and he overthrew the long ball which could have been a TD.  Thus, the two bad passes on the last drive are not totally unexpected and not attributable to lack of pre-season games.  At least from this angle.

Also, generally speaking, veteran teams do not benefit too much from preseason games.  The 'Niner players have a lot of experience not many rookie starters . . . are there?

Excellent? They gave up 400+ yards to a mediocre offense, and what 14 catches and 100+ yards to a new receiver? Far from excellent. Per two guys with a lot of rings, the team was not prepared. Exhibition games may have helped, but regardless, they were extremely disappointing and ill prepared for a regular season game against a divisional rival.

Defense was excellent until they wore down.   And the offense didn’t help them because they weren’t on the field very much after about the first quarter and a half. I told my buddy about halfway through the third quarter to the defense was going to have their tongues hanging on the ground by the middle of the fourth quarter. Particularly given the air quality issue. Which I’m sure didn’t help. I put the game almost completely on Garoppolo.  I thought he was lousy.  Didn’t move in the pocket, didn’t make plays, and missed an easy touchdown pass that could’ve won the game. Not to mention perhaps getting Kittle hurt for an extended period .

Agree completely re: Jimmy G.
But this L is on the coach (again).  AZ never should have even had the opportunity to try a FG before the end of the 1H, and that was the difference right there.
