In keeping with the California theme, it might make sense for Serra to be renamed after another figure from California history, possibly one with a Stanford connection. Maybe someone like John Steinbeck or Sally Ride.

More likely, Serra will be renamed after a donor, like the two new dorms in Lagunita Court (Meier and Norcliffe).

if I was a big donor, and I'm not,  I'd want a lot nicer building than Serra with my name on it (and I lived in Serra in 1979-80).......of course there is probably a big discount for renaming Serra compared to new buildings.......

She got four degrees from Stanford (two bachelor's degrees (one in English!), a M.S., and a Ph.D.). And who better to inspire the next generation of Stanford students to reach for the stars than an actual astronaut? She flew a Stanford pennant in space, people! That gets you a darn dorm, I say.

I just submitted that idea as well!!!

As far as I am concerned, that would be way better than a new building that they don't need and have no real use for. Let the donation be used for something that maybe not as obvious as a building, but is more useful. Let the name be put on an existing building for donor's who want the publicity, sort of like naming rights to Pac Bell Park.

Small world; I, too, failed at the draw and spent two years in Serra ('81-'82 and '82-'83).  Papa John, I must know you....

Hard to believe Sally Ride won't "win" the rename.  Steinbeck deserves consideration, but I think he was close to a one-and-done like McEnroe.

How about Day, after Sandra Day O'Connor.  Stanford undergrad, Stanford law school, USSC associate justice, first woman on the United States Supreme Court.

and for anyone who wants to submit a name for consideration the form set up by the University requires a stanford.edu email address (so the newer alumni email of alumni.stanford.edu works).

I sent an email to the address listed in the posting above and the person said they put the three names I suggested "on the list".

Yeah, I noticed that may stanfordalumni.org address did not work.

If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

The University has announced three possible replacement names for the Serra dorm in Stern Hall: Maya Angelou, Pat Parker and Sally Ride ’78

Angelou was an artist and civil rights activist who produced plays, movies and television programs across a span of more than 50 years, before her death in 2014. Parker was a lesbian poet and activist who served as executive director of the Oakland Feminist Women’s Health Center from 1978 to 1988. She died shortly afterward, in 1989. Ride was an astronaut who became the first woman in space in 1983. She died in 2012.

While Angelou and Parker have connections to California, only Ride has a connection to Stanford.

in our class ('82) Facebook group we had a poll on which of the three names should replace Serra, the results

Sally Ride - 23
Maya Angelou - 1
Pat Parker - 0

I sent an email to Provost Drell with the results, she acknowledged the email but no hints as to which way they are leaning.

The Daily article doesn't spell it out, but it looks to me like they are still trying to keep the "California pioneer" theme intact for Stern Hall. But it's not clear to me who has final say on the new name. The Board of Trustees?

Next Steps

Later this quarter, Serra residents and staff members will review nominations, and then forward three names to Vice Provost for Student Affairs Brubaker-Cole, who will in turn forward recommendations to Provost Persis Drell and President Marc Tessier-Lavigne for final consideration.
