Yes; he did redshirt as a true frosh. However, a player may redshirt and then, if they miss a subsequent season due to injury, are permitted to apply for a sixth year of eligibility.

Barton has only played 3 seasons (2016, 2017, and 2018)

Correct. Why I said above he has potentially two seasons of eligibility left (redshirt, injury-shortened, starter, starter, +1,+1 [if approved by NCAA, which is likely]).

Ellery Roberts the only one I can recall at Stanford

Didn't Skov get a 6th year? It sure felt like he was here that long!

Not likely.

https://www.athleticscholarships.net/201...dshirt.htm

Quote:Athletes must keep in mind both the five-year clock and their four seasons of competition. Even if an athlete gets a medical hardship waiver, he or she needs to have time left on their five-year clock (10-semester/15-quarter clock in Divisions II and III) to use that season.

This is problematic for athletes took a normal redshirt season or sat out due to a transfer. An athlete can generally not use a medical redshirt in those cases unless they get a clock extension or sixth year waiver. To do that the athlete show they lost two seasons outside of his or her control. The medical redshirt would be one, but the athlete would still need to show another.

That’s what I thought. Was Emory Roberts the last Stanfordite who received a sixth.

Funny. In the old Far Western Conference we had a fullback who played seven years of college football and then coached football and baseball. All under his own name. Had served during the Korean War at Ft. Ord on the best service team in the West which split his college time. NCAA not in evidence out at Lake Merced.

Interesting! Thanks for educating me, BC. I had thought that if the second "redshirt" season was for injury that a player could take a hardship sixth year. I stand corrected. My data points, including Ellery Roberts, must have had their hardship sixth year granted because their first redshirt year was judged "out of their control" due to transfer rules.

So, to correct myself: This next year would have been Sean Barton's last year of eligibility.

I guess the good news about all the early departures is that next year we will only have six players exhausting eligibility with maybe a couple more at high risk of going pro.

Quote:Sean Barton, Dylan Jackson, Frank Buncom and Nick Wilson have each announced their retirement from football. Brian Chaffin, Reagan Williams and Ben Edwards have yet to make their decisions public, but at this time Cardinal Sports Report does not expect them to play at Stanford next season. Whether that's due to retirement or transfer will be announced by each student-athlete.

So, potentially strike two more (I think Edwards already announced, no?)

Wasn't McGillicuddy a 6 year?

Yeah. I think it was Bob that posted elsewhere that Edwards tweeted that he was retiring due to injury. Maybe a tweet is not considered "official"?

At any rate, lots of exodi.

Sorry about that, BobK. I could have sworn someone posted that Edwards had said in a tweet that he was retiring.

I seem to recall the same thing. I remember wondering why FitzGerald of the Chronicle hadn't gotten the message just a bit ago when he suggested Edwards might return.

Sixth-year senior who has successfully come back from two operations and one ground-breaking procedure on his right knee...underwent a procedure involving platelet-rich plasma (PRP) drawn from his own blood that was injected back into his injured tendon at the point of the tear...has played in 22 games over the last two seasons as a reserve but is primed for a starting role at right tackle on a talented offensive line.

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere . . .
In the attached article, incoming frosh OLB Herron mentions that Curtis Robinson is moving inside.
