Is this a commitment? An offer? Neither?

Not a commitment. Just a show of interest. Williams doesn't **publicly** report an offer yet.

Looks like an offer, per reporting shown on his twitter feed. . . .

Now that the class of 2020 is signed, I moved this to the main board.

We do expect 1-2 including an OL to sign in the Feb period. Please keep that in mind.

Thinking of the class of 2021 in terms of needs:
Critical:
at least 1 QB (only McKee in the last two classes)
at least 2 OLBs (only Herron in the last two classes)
at least 3 DL (only 2 DEs and 1 DT in the last two classes)

Important:
at least 2 ILBs (three in 2019, but zero in 2020)
at least 1 elite TE (we have three over the last two years, but none were 4* or higher)
at least 3 OL (we have done fine over the last two years, but you always need OLs)
at least 2 S (only one in 2020)

Maintenence:
1 RB (we got two each in 2019 and 2020)
1 - 2 WR (we got three in 2020 after three in 2019)
1 - 2 CB (we got three in 2020 after four in 2019)

If available:
1? FB (do we use them in our offense any more, or is it an indictment of the quality of FB we have)

Not needed:
K: we got the best kicked in 2020
P: Sanborn is doing alright and he came in 2019
LS: we got one in 2020

Basically agree with all the above. Taking your minimums, that adds up to a class of 17, which seems about right for a "smaller" class. Not 14 again, please...

Quick corrections to your 2020 numbers: we had 3 CB signings this class, not 2 (although rumor has it one of them could play S/NB), and 3 WR, not 2.

A mega-whale WR from St. John Bosco (SoCal). We've signed players from Bosco in the past 2 classes: Colby Bowman in '19 and Drake Metcalf in '20.

We're expecting more offers today now that '20 is mostly done.

Thanks Sam (as always).  I will correct.

Doing the scholarship math:
Come fall of 2020, assuming no medical attrition (which we know is unlikely) and assuming no January signees, we will have 74 players with eligibility remaining, of which 13 will be academic seniors with the option of a fifth year.  Looking at the list, I see three potential NFL departures (Mills, Little and Adebo [if he doesn't declare after this year]), and a handful of possible folks who would not be expected to contribute if they stayed a fifth year.  A target of 17 looks about right.

4* OG from WA who is interested. Has visited us before.

3* DB from TX whose dad played at Minnesota and 6 seasons in the NFL. Reports a 1260 SAT and has encouraging offers for a defensive player (e.g. UGA, Utah, Cal).

Listed as an OT, but also plays DL, where he may be more valuable.

He's followed on Twitter by Carberry and Pritchard. OL.

Yeah, I guess we don’t need defensive players any more.

The only possible bright side to this is that coaches likely believe we're in good standing with our current front seven offers, at least for now.

Coming back to this. Fortunately, your thinking and the staff's are very similar.

Also, we're done with scholarship FBs AFAIK.

Thanks as always Sam.

I think the move away from fullbacks is unfortunate.  Because we were one of the only schools to use a fullback, I thought we could essentially monopolize the market in high school fullbacks.  And, at our best, we could use a fullback's versatility to our advantage.

Sad that we would have moved beyond Power and Spider-2-y-banana

not sure if we've moved completely away from FB, but it appears we've moved away from having several on scholarship.  it would be great to have another Lee Ward or two on the roster.
