Aside from age, Barton also had a pretty brutal injury.  Unless there was a graduate degree he really wanted, he had only downside to coming back.

I wonder if all the medical retirements, or retirements encouraged by injury, were also because of S&C problems...

Interestingly, because there are so few 5th years on the team, we actually NEED more attrition this year in order to accommodate what should be another 20+ man freshman class.
[/quote]

Yes, from a thread a few weeks ago, we were trying to come up with scholarship math and it was assumed folks like Peek, Butler, Speights and Parsons would not necessarily return. Swann and Williams departures would open up those spots of course, but the scholarship math does get tight quickly. With so few seniors, you can see why some scholarships were not utilized this past season. If Stanford used them all, we would only have room for about 14 in this recruiting class and the staff would be maligned for imbalance down the road.

The junior decisions also will have a big impact.  Adeebo is most likely gone. Parkinson  probably gone? Little?  I would be surprised if he were drafted in Round 1 if he goes out now coming off an injury, and i would be surprised if he wasn't a Round 1 draft pick if comes back healthy to Stanford next year. Little probably has a good economic argument to stay..  Round 1 contracts especially top half of Round 1 can be worth waiting a year for.  It does delay free agency but Round 1 money is good enough that if you never make it to free agency, you are still in good shape financially.

One area where I applaud Shaw is his consistent advice to his players who are looking to go early. He has said that if you're not going to get drafted in the first two rounds, you should stay. The reason is that contracts for 1st & 2nd round picks have guaranteed money, combined with the reduced probability of making a roster if you are drafted 3rd round or lower.

Not all recruits heed this advice, but I hope they do.

One thing to note is that 3 seniors who were not part of the announced senior day were part of the midfield Senior Day photo. I spot Hattis and Hamilton. The third unannounced senior is the injured player on the lower right that I can't identify with certainty.  The other 17 players in the picture are the 17 announced players.

I assume those 3 joined the picture to be with their classmates and not because they are planning on leaving.

Maybe we should start another thread for this, but in lieu of that...

Collin Riccitelli is in the transfer portal. This doesn't impact us very much as he's a walk-on who lost the backup K job to frosh Sanborn.

Well, all the best to him. I guess he thinks he’s good enough to kick in the pros. I don’t recall his range being that long but of course he didn’t have that many attempts.

Or maybe he’s a grad transfer looking at an opportunity to get a free Masters degree, which makes a bit more sense to me.

This is as good a place as any.  So to recap, in the transfer portal:
Dylan Powell
Collin Riccitelli
Bo Peek
Anthony Trinh

Will add more as others are announced.

Bo Peek and Anthony Trinh (walk-on) also in the portal per the above link. Note this link does not include Powell (or Riccitelli, for that matter).

Here’s a comprehensive list:
https://247sports.com/college/stanford/S...ferPortal/

Peek and Trinh were just added in the last five minutes while I was playing with this link.

We’re really limited in terms of incoming transfers, but it’s also fun to look at other teams like UW, ND, Cal and Mich to see if anyone is in the portal that we offered out of high school, such as Brennan Scarlett. It’s probably a null set, though.

I think you're right that it's overall close to none.

This season, looks like very few in the portal that we offered out of high school (at least so far):
- Isaiah Pryor, S, Ohio St --> ND
- Jake Bentley, QB, SCAR
- Jamyest Williams, S, SCAR

Of course Ohio State and South Carolina aren't exactly academic powers themselves. Last year, I know Jaelan Phillips actually gave us a legitimate look before he left UCLA for Miami. Players transferring from more academically-inclined schools last year who we offered out of HS:
- Jaelan Phillips, OLB, UCLA --> Miami
- Brandon Wimbush, QB, ND --> USF
- Chidi Okonya, DE/OLB, Duke --> NC Central
- Kekoa (Dylan) Crawford, Michigan --> Cal
- Myles Sims, CB, Michigan --> GT
- Arrington Farrar, S/LB, Wisconsin (no takers, retired)
- Brandon Stephens, RB, UCLA --> SMU
- Josh Imatorbhebe, WR, USC --> Illinois

We need safeties, and Williams has some experience at South Carolina (16 tackles in 4 games this year, 21 tackles and an INT in 8 games last year, and 32 tackles in 11 games his freshman year).  I wonder if he has had injury issues.  As a basis for comparison, Stewart Head leads all of our safeties with 39 tackles in 8 games.

Bentley is a three year starter at S Carolina, but got injured this year and Hilinski took over.  Hilinski's 113 PER shouldn't scare anyone, though.

VC

Scholarship math:
76 scholarship players with eligibility remaining
-2 in the transfer portal
+17 commits so far
==============
91

That means we will need at least six more slots, more if we get some more last minute commits.  I expect at least one medical retirement and up to four players declaring for the NFL, but we will see.

Enlightening math. How many of the 76 will be 5th year seniors? How many of the 4th and 5th year guys have a legit shot of playing time? How about walk-ons? A guy in my freshman dorm walked on, tho didn't get any playing time until his fourth and fifth years. Not sure if he ever was on a scholarship though.

21 are academic seniors with one year of eligibility left (all but Colby Parkinson, who is an academic junior with a year left).  Two (Peek and Powell) have entered the portal.

Academic seniors with eligibility remaining (excluding transfer portalites):
KJ Costello*
Jack Richardson†
Trevor Speights†
Dorian Maddox†
Scooter Harrington
Donald Stewart†
Devery Hamilton*
Henry Hattis*
Michael Williams*
Jovan Swann*
Thomas Schaffer
Jordan Fox*
Curtis Robinson*
Andrew Pryts*
Obi Eboh*
Treyjohn Butler†
Malik Antoine*
JJ Parson†

Guys with a * have started or are current starters.
Guys with a † I would think have little chance to have substantial playing time, but that's subjective.  You can make an argument that some of the guys with a * should also have a †.

BC

Among the rising academic seniors, that's a really strong class.  I think most are either starters or significant contributors.  Looking at the roster, I think only Ryan Johnson, and Noah Williams are unlikely to see much playing time unless injuries or early departures open up those positions.

Might Williams, Swann, and Shaffer decisions have impacted Peek in portal?

Don't think so; have a look at slide's reply to your post earlier in the thread.

I'm not following. Slide's post suggested Peek would be returning if Williams and Swann did not.  There was no reply to the scenario for Swann and Williams returning.

Thanks. Seems like quite a few with little or no chance of seeing a decent amount of playing time. Are our commitments to the scholarship athletes for four or five years? I'd imagine if we ask them to redshirt it'd be for five. Is there any appropriate way to say, hey, it doesn't look like you'll be playing next year and we need the scholarship space, then help them financially in a graduate program and not have them part of the football program?

Commitments are for four years.  No one is guaranteed a fifth year.
