Changes:

  • Switched starter at CB2 from Ethan Bonner to STM.
  • Denoted Kyle Petrucci as injured; Bailey Parsons now starter at long snapper.
  • Removed injury denotation from OSB given that he is listed on the depth chart.

If there are any other injuries that I have not noted in the chart, please let me know.

Walk-On Union Watch. Two non-scholarship players got PT against the Weenies.
  • OLB Caleb Phillips, sr. He has appeared in every game this season, but has yet to record a tackle.
  • TE Kyle McCombs, sr. He has appeared in every game this season, but has not recorded a statistic.
  • ILB Jake Lynch, jr. He made his season debut.
In addition...
  • WR Brycen Tremayne, a junior former walk-on, played but did not have any receptions.
  • OLB Thunder Justice Keck, a senior former walk-on, started and recorded one tackle.
  • P Ryan Sanborn, a sophomore former walk-on, had eight punts for only a 37.6-yard average, but four of those were downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line. His longest punt was 49 yards.
  • S Noah Williams, a senior former walk-on, had one tackle.
  • S J.J. Parson, a 5th year former walk-on, played on ST.
  • ILB Spencer Jorgensen, a sophomore former walk-on, does not appear on the participation report, but SMF says that he played on ST.

Jorgensen and Parson both played on STs.

I don't recall seeing Lynch, but maybe he played STs too. Not sure.

Thanks. The game report does not list Jorgensen, and does list Lynch. But, as we know, they are often filled with errors.

Parson is listed; I just whiffed on that one.

I'll make the changes above. Thanks SMF, as always.

Really disappointed in the OLB's. Especially Andres Fox. They could really use Umerah.

According to the Stanford Daily, Bonner was out for Big Game with an injury.

https://www.stanforddaily.com/2020/11/27/big-game-2/

If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)

I figured it must have been something like that; I was surprised they were starting STM. I'll correct the above. Thanks for the confirmation, PJ.

M*A*S*H Unit. The following players did not appear against the Weenies due to injury or COVID protocol.
  • Running Back
    • Dorian Maddox, 5th yr. (out for the season)
  • Outside Linebacker
    • Loa Kaufusi, jr.
    • Tobe Umerah, jr.
  • Inside Linebacker
    • Ricky Miezan, jr. (starter)
    • JMF, jr. (out for the season)
    • Tristan Sinclair, so. (out for the season)
    • Aeneas DiCosmo, so.
  • Cornerback
    • Ethan Bonner, jr. (starter; out for the season)
    • Nicolas Toomer, so. (out for the season)
  • Long Snapper
    • Kyle Petrucci, jr. (starter; walk-on)

Note that I removed OSB from injury denotation.

We are remarkably healthy on offense. We are remarkably not at linebacker.

I feel bad for Bonner; I thought he looked good. Kid is really struggling with the injury bug.

As always, I welcome your input or corrections.

Frosh Force. Eight true freshmen played against the Weenies, with two debuts. None recorded any statistics unless noted.
  • RB Casey Filkins played in his third game.
  • OT Myles Hinton played in his third game.
  • WR John Humphreys had one reception for six yards in his third game.
  • LS Bailey Parsons played in his second game as the team's long snapper.
  • CB Omari Porter played in his second game. He recovered Thomas Booker's blocked extra point to seal the game!
  • RB E.J. Smith had two receptions for three yards in his second game.
  • WR Silas Starr made his collegiate debut.
  • TE Benjamin Yurosek played in his third game.

Tiny correction: I believe this was Hinton's third game, but notably he actually played a bunch of snaps (I want to say 15ish?) versus just a couple in the first two.

I have no idea if scooping up a blocked kick counts as a fumble recovery or something, but FWIW Omari Porter scooped up the blocked XP that ended the game.

Also @Langdude Jake Lynch did play on the opening kickoff vs UW just now :)

According to the participation report, Hinton did not play against Oregon; UW was his third game.

Omari Porter did collect that blocked kick! I wonder why it does not show in the box score. Corrected above.

Thanks; that makes more sense. I was surprised to see he did not play.

I was also surprised that Manley did not play. He played a lot last year as a true frosh. Porter taking his snaps?

I'll put that under "COVID protocol."

Porter is not taking Manley's snaps; STM and Bonner did. Now both are out.

Against UW we ran a lot more base 3-4 sets (instead of nickel) because we expected them to run the ball more, which they generally did. Hence DWP seeing his most extended time of the season. Kelly-Antoine-Williamson-STM played practically every snap in the secondary, and McGill was the nickel all game (played roughly half the snaps) due to his relative strength in run support. (Clearly a weak link in coverage though, which was exploited a couple times.) So there was no "room" for Manley. Plus I believe staff liked STM more against the run anyways. He likes hitting. I'm excited about him moving forward.

Noah Williams had a defensive series at FS in relief of Antoine and I'm not sure why. Antoine came back in afterwards.

Frosh Force. Seven true freshmen played against the Dawgs, with one debut. None recorded any statistics unless noted.
  • RB Casey Filkins played in his fourth game. He returned a kickoff for 20 yards.
  • OT Myles Hinton played in his fourth game.
  • WR John Humphreys had one reception for seven yards in his fourth game.
  • LS Bailey Parsons played in his third game as the team's long snapper.
  • WR Bryce Farrell made his season debut.
  • CB Omari Porter played in his third game.
  • TE Benjamin Yurosek played in his fourth game. No catches, but I remember he was targeted for one that was almost intercepted.

Interesting that we didn't give any offensive snaps to EJ Smith after a couple designed plays vs. CU and Cal.

Porter only saw ST snaps. He and Tremayne are the edge rushers on the FG block team.

Looks like Farrell is our next punt returner after Wilson/Wedington. I believe his only opportunity vs. UW was punted out of bounds. We should see more tonight.

Bummer on the pass intended for Yurosek. He had green grass ahead of him on a crossing/in route against a slower LB; Davis had the right target, but a bad throw behind him.

I also thought it odd that Smith did not get any snaps. Woods did. Perhaps they only use three RBs.

On the chart, I had actually denoted Farrell as the PR and Peat as KR. As you said ... we'll see!

I also guessed at starting WR as Fehoko and Tremayne, but the latter could be Higgins...

Strange that Gabe Reid does not start at either ILB (Damuni ahead of him) or OLB (both Keck and Herron ahead of him).
