You can get a pulse ox on Amazon (though they may be sold out).  I have one that I got for my medical mission in Honduras.  I guess now it could come in handy.

A close work colleague lost her friend (40 year old social worker) in New Orleans last weekend.

They are all on backorder. He had a hospital grade pulse ox delivered.

Two friends, a general surgeon in NYC who had mild cold symptoms a week ago, already asymptomatic for a few days by time he got his test results. And then an internist in Seattle taking care of covid patients developed cough and fever two days ago, test pending but likely positive.

In an earlier post I brought up the question of why outcome across those who contract Covid-19 is so variable.  Here's a story that explores that question:

Just found out that my mom's cousin has it and is in the ICU on a ventilator. I never met the man, as far as I know, but it's still sucky for my family. This is upstate NY.

Sorry to hear that Stupac. I hope your second mom's cousin turns the corner soon if he hasn't already. The first COVID-19 patient I know and had mentioned early fortunately recovered and is now out of the hospital, but he said at the time he was discharged that in his hospital he was among the only patients to have been taken off a respirator alive...

FWIW, I now know four friends/colleagues who are confirmed positives (all in NYC). None, to my knowledge, have co-morbidities, and all are under the age of 50. However, I'm a little worried because in one case, I haven't heard from them in several days despite friendly text messages to check in, and at that point they had been running a 102 fever for five days straight... :(

HAH. Was going to say second cousin, but then realized he was actually a first cousin once removed, but that seemed like word salad -- which I ended up with anyway. =)

Three friends of mine: woman in her 20s, man in his 30s, and a woman in her 40s.  All have or are expected to pull through, though all of them were knocked flat with the symptoms.  The man in his 30s is a nurse and had to be hospitalized.

I'm just impressed that you know that that's what it is. I actually did too because my wife has a complicated family and knows all this stuff, so I learned via her, but figure most people just think "once removed" means "that stuff they said on Loony Toons to make it sound funny".

Also, depending on how you count, I have three moms! Actual, step, in-law. That does seem like too many. In this case it's the first one, though. I haven't heard an update yet, I assume news coming out will be pretty slow.

Three of my coworkers.  Two in NYC, recovering.  One in Philadelphia in ICU.

Three of my sons' friends, all late 20s.  Two in ICUs.

I’m sorry, Mick and Nan3cy.  I am certain many of us will stand where you stand all too soon.  May your friends and ours recover and prosper.

In 1938 Neville Chamberlain declared "Peace in our time", Superman first appeared in Action Comics, Seabiscuit beat War Admiral ....... and C.a.l last won the Rose Bowl.

My sincere wishes for a speedy and full recovery to those infected.
Lefty, I think you'll see a classmate in our FB group saying he's had it and is now trying to donate plasma. Another Roble dormmate's non-alum husband has just been discharged after a tough couple of weeks.

Thanks, JJJ.  My personal degrees of separation is shrinking.   I'd much prefer it to stay at the traditional 7 degrees.

Thanks, Lefty and JJJ. We are cautiously optimistic, but she’s been on a ventilator for a couple of weeks now, and what I’m reading is that after a certain point it just doesn’t get better.

Right now what is more on my mind is what C-19 is doing to the ordinary, every-day vagaries of life. My daughter-in-law’s mother died on Friday. She was in her 90s and deep into Alzheimer’s, so her death was certainly not pure tragedy. But her daughter could not be with her. Her husband, who is in hospice with kidney failure, could not be with her. My DIL had to get permission to visit her father, to tell him that his wife of 64 years was gone. There will be no funeral for God knows how long. I cannot hug my DIL, who is a much-loved part of a remarkable family. It sucks.
