Apparently,  one institute in Russia has completed vaccine trials and there's talk of October mass distribution.

Putin is under a lot of domestic pressure. Widescale open protest in the east. He needs some good press.

Would not surprise me if they stole IP from a company already past early trials to give a fig leaf of safety before widescale distribution. The one China is injecting into their soldiers is an adenovirus vector vaccine similar to the one in the article. Published first trials in Lancet in May.

One of our friends is a family of physicians, one's doing a residency at Johns Hopkins.  He told his mother (also an MD) that he wouldn't consider any vaccine not made in America.

I'm not entirelty sure I trust the ones made here. This will be the fastest vaccine developed in history, perhaps using a novel type of vaccine never before used in humans. As a healthcare worker I'll prob get one early. Probably worth the risk given my exposure and otherwise good health, but we'll still initially know only how well these do in 30kish people. Even if they do a great job at a diverse population for study, how well this performs in kids, old folks, those with preexisting conditions.....all may not be totally clear at first.

But most definitely would not even consider getting something developed outside of the US or Western Europe.

Considering the amount of person hours being spent on this, I'd be relatively sanguine about the speed. But, no, I do think we need the FDA seal of approval.

I will definitely wait for FDA approved vaccine!   That said, I hope global science can learn from any Russian or Chinese vaccines that get rolled out this fall while our more favored candidates are still in testing.

Russia is just looking for positive PR. Of course, nothing that Russia says can be believed.  It's a country that advocates cheating in Olympic sports because it has such an inferiority complex, and messes around with other countries online because it is otherwise so weak. It's intelligence services and organized crime work together FFS.

And oh the irony that Russia touts a vaccine, when Russia is the biggest booster of the anti-vaccine movement. I wouldn't take a vaccine made by Russia if my life dependent on it. Not only do I not trust them to develop something that works. I would rather die than let them take credit for something that does.

If approved, I would certainly take the Oxford/AZ or the GSK/Sanofi vaccines even though they are not being developed in the US.

I’m not sure what you meant about the FDA seal of approval, GR.  You could volunteer to be in a trial of one of the vaccines, otherwise you won’t be able to get it but for FDA approval.

Looks like Russia's vaccine attempt has been approved by Russia's Health Ministry

https://apnews.com/fcda62ad992db414d65f23b2adb78e44

Several countries are apparently lined up to help test.
Quote:advanced trials are set to start Wednesday that will involve “several thousand people” and span several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines and possibly Brazil.

With the way Russia controls information, one hopes that these other countries will be more transparent.

The Russians made automobiles, too.  . .
