Shameless plug for a John Elway bio that is available as of today. Written by Jason Cole (Stanford class of 84) who has followed Elway's career as a player and NFL exec for 40 years. This is an unauthorized biography, but it includes many hours of personal interviews that Jason had with Elway.

The author rang a bell with me.  Remember James Hogue, a 24 year old who pretended to be 16, stole an identity and enrolled at Palo Alto High School?  He was uncovered by Jason Cole, the author of Elway's biography.  Cole claimed that the Hogue story gave him the passion to pursue journalism as a career.  Cole later uncovered the Reggie Bush shenanigans at USC.

Hogue had an interesting life.  He applied to Princeton as a self-taught Utah resident.  He was accepted and deferred for a year, claiming a dying mother.  In reality, he'd been sentenced to jail for stealing a bike.  He was released after nine months, went to Princeton, got accepted into the Ivy dining club (snootiest of the snooty clubs), but was recognized by a Paly alum now attending Princeton.  Went to jail for a few months, ended up working at a Harvard Mineralogy museum...and they discovered $50k in minerals missing.  Quelle surprise.

He's quite the con man:

Great story, Mick.

Sheesh! Makes most of my defects seem pretty manageable. Pathological character, that dude, to be sure. Some serious flaws there.

Went on the zoom thing, bought the book, just started. It took me a little getting used to, but because I was there from '81, and we missed our 35th reunion this year, I am trying to savor it slowly. Thanks to Spiny and 82lsju for the info. I know there's another free zoom event with the author on Dec 1 that you can look up on the SAA website if you're so inclined.
