"Monday's game vs. San Diego has been cancelled, in accordance with the Santa Clara County Public Health Department's emergency directive."

From GoStanford page.

Yes, it seemed inevitable, and now it’s official. I feel so bad for the players. These women have worked so hard, dreamed big dreams, and now have, what will probably be, a long wait. How sad!
It is likely that this pandemic won’t subside until summer, assuming enough people consent to vaccinations, then wait for herd immunity to set in. In the meantime, we might see stops and starts of the season. I really hope that we can have a season, and maybe we can in January through April or May. Still, that might be forcing it.
The larger issue, as others have aptly pointed out on these pages, is that people are getting sick and dying and we have a job to do in eradicating the virus in this country. In the meantime, my heart goes out to the Cardinal women. I hope that their dreams can manifest.

With no classes till Jan, I wouldn't be surprised if they consider living out of state for the next month, similar to when the WVB team practiced in San Diego, to still be able to play games.

Christmas/New Years could turn into a spike on top of a spike.   I can see the Santa Clara Covid policy lasting through the end of January.  Is it possible Stanford WBB is the only team in the PAC-12 that cancels most if not all of its season.

There would be some irony if the PAC-12 team with the best chance to win a NCAA championship is the only PAC-12 team not eligible for the tournament due to lack of games.

From this morning's Merc.  Surprised no one has posted it:

Quote:However, coach Tara VanDerveer said her No. 2-ranked women's basketball team canceled today's game and will not play or practice at the school until the restrictions are lifted. The Cardinal had four home games and three road contests scheduled through Dec. 21.

"We'll be playing when it is safe," VanDerveer said. "We're flexible. We will do what we're told to do and what we can do." Stanford men's basketball team opens the season today in Asheville, North Carolina, and will be there through Wednesday.

After that, Stanford officials are not sure what will happen, a team spokesman said.

So it looks as if WBB will not be playing.  No effort to avoid Cody's restrictions.

Santa Clara County is getting hammered.

Quote:"It is going to be the most draconian in Santa Clara because that is where the biggest problems are," Rutherford said. "If we need to lock it down further, we need to lock it down further." Santa Clara County recorded 747 new cases on Saturday, its largest singleday total of the pandemic. Cody has said if current trends continue, the county could run out of hospital space in two to three weeks.

I think it was posted in another thread... I’m gonna remain hopeful that something can be done to continue the season for them unless the season is cancelled or postponed altogether.. other thread has post of football team possibly relocating, so hope the same can be done for the Women’s Basketball team.
