If true, it looks like we have lost:

Overall, seems like an upgrade. Now, if HI were to return, it would be an impressive upgrade of talent.

MOC/Silva were a mediocre PG tandem last year. Carlyle/Bynum would probably be an upgrade.

In almost every offensive metric, Bynum is an upgrade on not only Silva, but O'Connell as well. Career numbers comparison:

Bynum: 27.4% assist rate, 14.8 % turnover rate; 78% FT the last two seasons; 33% career 3 PT
O'Connell: 23.2% assist rate, 21% turnover rate; 78% FT last year; 30.1% career 3 PT
Silva: 16.9% assist rate, 27.5% (!) turnover rate; 62% FT, 40.1% 3 PT (but only 25% last year)

The jury's out on his defense, and at 5-10, he's probably limited in the kind of impact he can make, but the numbers shows there probably isn't enough difference between Bynum and O'Connell/Silva on the defensive end to offset the upgrade on offense.

Bynum's arrival, alongside Carlyle, gives Stanford a potentially significant offensive upgrade at their weakest offensive position. I'm not particularly bullish on this team's ability to outplay the coaching (and thus will keep my expectations low), but having a steady veteran point guard who has big game experience is probably the best thing we could have hoped for.
