I heard that even Van Morrison is sick of Brown Eyed Girl.  Don McLean, on the other hand, has fully embraced his one hit.  I saw an interview of him once on CBS Sunday Morning.  He happily acknowledged that he's lived off that one song.

Don McLean plays a free show every year at an Indian casino near my in-laws.  I keep meaning to catch that show and time it so that I stand right outside towards the end just to hear that song.  I'm sure he plays it at the end, otherwise people would leave.

The biggest benefit of the destruction of the economics of recorded music is that it has forced older acts to put aside difference or overcome sloth to tour again.

Don McLean of American Pie?

That one.  Not the UCLA power forward that threatened to kill Stanford's point guard.

And speaking of Over the Rainbow, have any of you ever synced the video of the Wizard of Oz with the sound track from Dark Side of the Moon?  Pretty wild.  Just start the music when the Lion roars at the beginning of the movie.

One of the few concerts I've been to was The Police during their reunion tour a few years ago at Dodger Stadium.

BC, I was at that show also. My best friend from high school flew in for the occasion, which was kind of perfect. He and I had spent hours upon hours listening to the Police in high school, so it was great to be sitting with him, singing every word to every song. Oh, and Sting and the boys were on point that night, weren't they?

Eva Cassidy's rendition of Fields of Gold is the best I have ever heard.  Also, her version of Over the Rainbow is the best version of that ballad.

Does anyone remember Michelle Kwan's final skate to "Fields of Gold"? It was a cover, so perhaps it was Eva Cassidy. I'm not a figure skating fan, but I'll never forget watching that. One, the song was beautiful, but the back story of the event made the whole thing heart-wrenching. Kwan was the most decorated skater in American history, but she had never won Olympic gold. This was supposed to be her Olympics, and her final skate at the Olympic Gala, or whatever they call that final celebration night, to Fields of Gold, was clearly planned as a reference to the gold medal she hoped to have won. Sadly, she took bronze, so the song took on a different meaning that night. She skated much of the routine with tears streaming down her face. Absolutely heartbreaking.

CowboyIndian, I had heard of the Wrecking Crew documentary and had vague plans to watch it one of these days. Your post pushed me to find it. Man, what a movie!!!!! Genius. You know who should really love it? The Monkees. All these decades, people have been razzing them for not playing on their own records. Now we find out nobody else did, either. Not the Beach Boys. Not the Byrds. None of 'em.

Brian Wilson did write much of that great music, which is the rarer gift.

Now your point on the Byrds is a good one.  Of their three best songs, Dylan wrote two of them, and Pete Seeger and King Solomon wrote the other one.  If they didn't even play the instruments, what the hell did they do?  I guess they sang, making them a folk rock boy band?

In the documentary, Roger McGuinn says the Wrecking Crew laid down two complete songs -- Mr. Tambourine Man and another which I don't think he named -- in a single afternoon. (McGuinn was the only actual Byrd to participate, and I think he did the vocals as well.) By contrast, he said it took the Byrds 77 takes just to do the instrumental tracks on one song.

I really want to see this documentary. Is there a way if you aren't a Netflix subscriber?

McGuinn's voice is very recognizable and I'm sure he did the lead vocal on Mr. Tambourine Man.

You can get Netflix for free for 30 days, then quit.  Easy peasy.

Just watched another music doc reminsecent of The Wrecking Crew, also on Netflix: Muscle Shoals. It's a more professionally made film, though I enjoyed the Wrecking Crew's big reveal more.

It's about two recording studios in a small Alabama town where many records we know and love got made. Recommended for the music nuts here.

You have to be a certain age, and maybe from Southern California, to appreciate it, but this is a classic and helped establish a genre.  The leader, Bob Berryhill, lived down the street from us and was in my h.s. Class; they practiced in Bob's garage (and yes, my mom called his mom more than once to complain they were keeping the baby awake.). They played at my 50th a few weeks ago.  Enjoy.  Sur's Up!

When I was in junior high, this was our favorite Surfaries record.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGTlb3qOrAo

Surfer Joe is fun, and has a fun story.  The band was invited to record Surfari, their first time in a studio.  Did it, then the producer said something like, "ok great, now let's do the flip."

"Flip"

"Yeah, you know, gotta have something on the 45 flip side."

That had no second number, so they sat down, worked out Surfer Joe, and that was that.

Per Barryhill, anyway.
