WBB good bye Lili

Such an exciting player to watch. Thanks for the memories. Enjoy your senior year on the Farm.

Such a shame that she cannot play her senior year. The post-triangle offense was installed chiefly for her and Amber two seasons ago. I do think Sniezek has the potential to become her equal--Marta has shown she can take it to the basket and began to make some treys at the end of the year. If she continues that trajectory she will become awesome.
I predict, based on this news and on the Paye interview, that Marta and Brittany McPhee will be the initial beneficiaries for more time. Karlie might well head back to the 2 and McPhee get longer stretches at the 3. Bri Roberson could always challenge for more time--but she went into a shooting slump last year that lasted most of the year. She will have to establish that she can be consistent. And then we don't know whether Romano has developed over the summer and how quickly Carrington, Wilson, and Brewer will be integrated. Carrington could spell McPhee at the 3, Wilson could spell Sniezek at the point, and Brewer looks to me as if she could provide some minutes at the 2. With Fingall being a potentially excellent defender in the paint, the entering class will give us depth at nearly every position. But it is perhaps too much to ask the entering class to be starting or scoring many points. We have to hope that more experienced players have substantially improved over the summer. So....the preseason will be quite interesting again, as Tara tries out the various pieces.
The announcement said she would remain on scholarship. If she remains on an athletic scholarship and does not play, I presume that she nevertheless will retain her eligibility for another year?
I've been looking for the updated roster all summer and they refused to update it until today. Obviously they were delaying until Lili's situation was resolved. The new roster is now up:
http://www.gostanford.com/roster.aspx?path=wbball
This roster shows only 12 players. Not only is Lili missing, but Fingall and Wilson are not yet listed. I presume it is just slow in getting updated, although Brewer and Carrington are on there.
EDIT: They were editing the site as I wrote. Fingall and Wilson just popped up. I presume Kailee is coming down.

"The announcement said she would remain on scholarship. If she remains on an athletic scholarship and does not play, I presume that she nevertheless will retain her eligibility for another year?"
I'm sure we will see her playing her final season elsewhere.  We await the where.
The way the software seems to work is it leads the work in process so we see the roster not yet complete. It has happened in other sports.Â

That makes sense. She gets her degree, and has a chance to come into a new program as a graduate transfer.
Good luck to Lili. It's a bummer we won't get a chance to watch her play her senior season at Stanford.

FWIW, Lili says she's making the decision.
For all I know, this could be more complicated than, say, a QB transferring because of a lack of playing time.
In any case, I hope things work out well for her.

That article raises more questions than answers. If she is not playing this year, but will play at some other school next year, it is hard to figure out the scenario
behind her reasoning. In any event, I like Sniezek a lot.  I like her ball control and ability to drive to the basket.

Not very surprising since we saw her absence from team activities for months. I am surprised she did not transfer. I imagine the plan is to graduate and then do a grad transfer, assuming she is still interested in playing basketball. A shame it came to this, but given what was posted on another Stanford fan board (which I won't repeat but which was very negative) by family, maybe this is the best for all concerned - Lili does what she needs to do for herself and maybe the team dynamic improves now that someone who if we go by what was posted was not all that happy departs. Best of luck to Lili in her Stanford studies and her future basketball career, should she choose to have one somewhere else.
Can't lose an all-conference player and not miss her but the team is deep and the young players may well be ready to pick up the slack.Â

so much for my concussion theory, though glad she is healthy. Depending what he grad school ambitions are, doesn't this mean that she gets all 4 years of undergrad plus at least 1 of grad school free (and perhaps more if she becomes a grad assistant)? If she wasn't happy, then that's a brobdingnagian financial plus.
We definitely will miss her play.

That is a big blow. Even with the behind-the-scenes troubles, it's a net negative to lose a player with her experience, shooting prowess and skills from the team. The only silver lining I can see is that the decision was made now and not in September or October just before the season started which allows Tara more time to adjust the game plan/plays/lineup and the players, especially the guards, will know they'll have to step it up.
Hopefully, the freshmen are able to make a faster contribution than expected, Bri is over her shooting slump and Brit/Alanna are potentially ready for more playing time.

Really strange. I hope a fuller explanation eventually emerges, as this is highly unusual for a player as talented as Lili. Best to her in whatever she does next - she was fun to watch and really helped us transition on offense between Chiney and the emergence of Bird. For being a little heralded recruit, she really became a playmaker for us.
Thankfully we have a lot of players who can play 1 and 2, so while a loss, especially early in the season, with Sniezek developing, Wilson coming in, we should be solid at the 1 for the next few seasons. I'm more worried about our post players. That pipeline isn't nearly as strong as our guards, Fingall being the major exception.

I hope that
1. She's made the right decision for her
2. She graduates
3. She still has the opportunity to play as a grad transfer if she wishes
4. Our program doesn't take the easy way out and blame a disgruntled player, and instead takes a look in the mirror at what can be done to avoid a repeat scenario
5. She makes the WNBA if that's what she wants to do
Good luck to her

Here's what I don't follow. There have been indirect suggestions she wasn't happy. If she didn't like a player or coach, why not just suck it up, play the year out, and move on to the WNBA if that is her goal. Now she loses a year of potentially playing in the WNBA and will play for another college team where she might not like it either.

Having no information at all as to what this is all about, I do wonder [as someone who has been following WBB at Stanford for approx. 26 years]: what's the deal with point guards and the Stanford program? This isn't the first time there appears to have been ...issues ... involving the either a point guard who was here or highly-talented point guards who chose not to come here.
Of course, maybe it's just my imagination...

I am not sure there is any reason for me to know any details, but chimera's post seems to imply a situation consistent with palo alto's comment that she wasn't happy and possibly didn't mesh well with somebody (many bodies?) connected to the team.
I'm not asking for any more info - just noting that the posts on these sorts of things always seem to be very mysterious to those who don't already know what is going on.

I really feel for Lili. Each time I heard her speak I must say she seemed articulate, humble, and well adjusted. She is an easy player to like. It is also obvious that she is very closely connected to her family, and she was deeply affected by losing two people close to her last year.Â
I think it was this interview with Tara that I found most significant for understanding how Tara thinks the team will develop--and perhaps a hint of insight into her view of Lili. It came just days after Washington bounced us from the NCAAs.Â

Quote:Wilson is the sister of Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson. She has a point-guard mentality, VanDerveer said, and her brother is a fantastic role model for her. Hes a worker.http://www.sfgate.com/collegesports/arti...216231.php
VanDerveer is concerned about Carringtons knee (she came off ACL surgery this year). Shes very athletic, VanDerveer said. If shes healthy, she gives us a different dimension on the wing.
Fingall will contribute right away, VanDerveer said. Shes strong. Shes not going to be pushed around by anyone.
In the post, McCall is just going to get better. The corks off the Champagne, and its bubbling. Give me 10 of her, please.
She might play Samuelson some at shooting guard instead of wing next season, she said. We need to get her more shots, VanDerveer said. She was underrated as a defender. I would hope shell have an All-Pac-12 year.
VanDerveer was blunt about what some players must do to improve. She wants Thompson to pass more. We need her to be unselfish and have a better turnover-to-assist ratio. Kaylee Johnson needs to really work on her offensive moves and improve her free-throw shooting. Kailee Johnson has to make a decision about her relationship with basketball. Shes fairly skilled and very smart, but how important is basketball to Kailee? I think she could be a lot better.
Brittany McPhee has great skills on both offense and defense, but it was hard to find minutes for her because she wasnt as consistent as other players, VanDerveer said. Brianna Roberson was miscast as a point guard, VanDerveer said, but added, If she gets her shot going and plays good defense, she can help you.
Australian freshman Alanna Smith has a big strong body and could be a great stretch 4 (forward), but she has to improve her skills. Another freshman, point guard Marta Sniezek, was impressive as a passer, especially down the stretch. I would put Marta in a gym and tell her to make 300-to-500 threes a day, VanDerveer said.

Totally agree. The one time I actually got to speak to her (for all of a few minutes, although she spoke at length to a bunch of fans), I was really struck by how genuine and grounded she was. As far as I'm concerned, the sky's the limit for her future--WNBA or the White House or whatever she sets her sights on.
