Here are the games of the week (with game times and TV channel included for your television planning pleasure)
Pac-12 Games
Saturday, October 8
* #21 Colorado @ SC (-4.5) (1:00pm PT on Pac-12 Network). If you aren't enjoying the Buffs' resurgence after all those years in the proverbial desert, then you may just not enjoy college football. Good for them! Get a win, and we'll see you guys in a couple of weeks.
* #5 Washington (-9) @ Oregon (4:30pm PT on FOX). The goal to win the conference and get back to the Rose Bowl remains, and it starts with UW losing at least two more games. So, go Ducks? It'll be fascinating to see how the Huskies perform in this game. Oregon won't let go of its win streak without a fight, but the Ducks may just not have enough fight left in them.Â
* C.al (-13.5) @ Oregon State (6:00pm PT on Pac-12 Network). Surprised this line isn't bigger. Oregon State lost by 40 to CU. 40! I get that CU is back and all, but goodness gracious.Â
* Arizona @ #24 Utah (-10) (7:00pm PT on FS1). More ranked teams is better, I suppose, so go Utes.
* UCLA (-10) @ Arizona State (7:30pm PT on ESPN2)
* Washington State @ #15 Stanford (-7.5) (7:30pm PT on ESPN2). Thank goodness this game is at home. This line has already dropped from -12.5 to -7.5, because I'm a little terrified of what Wazzu will do to our banged-up secondary. We should be able to score points, though. Hopefully a big bounce-back game for Christian.
Other Top 25 Games
Friday, October 7
* #3 Clemson (-17) @ Boston College (4:30pm PT on ESPN). I know it's a road conference game, but only a 17-point line? BC lost to Virginia Tech 49-0 a few weeks ago.Â
Saturday, October 8
* Texas vs. #20 Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas (-11) (9:00am PT on FS1). The least hyped UT-OU matchup ever?
* LSU (-3) @ #18 Florida (9:00am PT on ESPN). SEC cannibalization continues with LSU winning big behind Coach O.Â
* #6 Houston (-17) @ Navy (12:00pm PT on CBSSN).Â
* Indiana @ #2 Ohio State (-29) (12:30pm PT on ESPN).Â
* #25 Virginia Tech @ #17 UNC (-1.5) (12:30pm PT on ABC/ESPN2).
* #9 Tennessee @ #8 Texas A&M (-6.5) (12:30pm PT on CBS). A&M will lose later on anyway, so staying in the Top 10 makes UCLA look a bit better, I suppose?
* #1 Alabama (-14) @ #16 Arkansas (4:00pm PT on ESPN). I don't believe for a second that Arkansas is for real, because I believe that TCU (ARK's only good win) isn't very good, either. Alabama should cruise.
* #4 Michigan (-29.5) @ Rutgers (4:00pm PT on ESPN2). This one should get ugly. Man, is the Big Ten ever top-heavy this year. A couple of championship-caliber teams and a lot of dreck and dross from the middle on down.
* #23 Florida State @ #10 Miami (-3) (5:00pm PT on ABC). Let chaos reign. Go Noles? Sure, go Noles.
Opponent Watch
* N.D. @ North Carolina State (-2.5) (9:00am PT on ABC). It'd be nice for Our Lady to get back to .500 before our matchup with them, at least. This line opened with ND as a -2.5 favorite, so it's moved 5 points in just a few days. Uff da.
* Texas Tech @ Kansas State (-7.5) (4:00pm PT on ESPNU). K-State doesn't have any votes in either poll (apparently losing by one point on the road to unbeaten West Virginia was enough to convince several voters to drop K-State out of their Top 25), but a win here would be a nice step toward being ranked.Â
* Rice is blessedly idle.Â
Overall: The morning window is fairly weak, but I know you'll all be rooting for Minnesota to beat Iowa to win back Floyd of Rosedale (the bronze pig that is the trophy between those two schools). That game is 9:00am PT on ESPN2, so there's no reason to watch any other games then. The noon window of games gets a little more interesting, with a Top 10 matchup (Tennessee-TAMU) and a chance to see if CU can go into the Coliseum and get a win. As wounded as I am by last week, I'm interested in Washington-Oregon, and Alabama-Arkansas is another good game in that window. Then, late night, we get a chance to come back angry and get a convincing win.Â
Gameday Watch
Gameday will be at the only Top 10 matchup of the week, Tennessee at Texas A&M. This is Tennessee's third appearance and A&M's first. The first 5 Gameday matchups break down like so:
SEC: 6 (Tennessee 3, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M)
ACC: 5 (Louisville 2, FSU, Clemson, Virginia Tech)
Big Ten: 1 (Wisconsin)
Pac 12: 0
Big 12: 0
That Big Ten number will go up some when we get into games between Michigan and Ohio State. But next week's Ohio State-Wisconsin matchup might get beat out by Tennessee again, since Tennessee hosts Alabama. Another reason to root for A&M, I suppose.Â
For the Pac-12, it's at least theoretically possible that if we have a big bounceback win over WSU and beat ND, while CU beats SC and ASU, Gameday might want to come out west in Week 8 for what could be a matchup of two Top 15 teams, but that same weekend has Texas A&M at Alabama (currently #8 vs. #1). Alabama hasn't been on Gameday yet, so this would be an obvious opportunity.
