I love Stanford football. I am passionate about the team and the high level of play year after year that I never thought was possible. I don't want the music to stop. I want to be part of it. I would prefer not to have to pay $500 per year in seat donations that I need to pay for my seats, but I would much rather pay it for the next 30 years and die with $10k (after tax) less in my pocket (sorry kids) than to miss out on the experience.  Go Stanford!

No one here is giving up on Stanford.  But some of us may decide that monetary support can be withheld in protest against certain (terrible) university or athletic department decisions.  We can support Stanford in many other ways besides money--engagement with local alumni clubs, representing through admissions interviews, serving in leadership capacities, etc.  But it is noted that Stanford cares more about your money than any of those other avenues of support, and with that, some of us can make our statements.

I understand the sentiment and I wish the AD would be more farsighted in making decisions like that to maximize short term revenue at the expense of alienating precious fans, but I was just tired of a post about not supporting Stanford continuing to be at the top of the message board so I wanted to post a more positive statement to move that one down.

My decision not to renew is more about the long drive, the late kickoffs, my son living in the South and my age. An entertainment business has the right to charge whatever they think they can get away with. For example there is a thrill to watch a great movie in a theatre as the lights dim. But it's not so bad with a brobdingnagian plasma monitor and Netflix at home. No gas, no 35 minute drive to Petaluma, no chance to fall asleep at the wheel in Hicks Valley.

If all the kickoffs occurred between noon and 2pm I'd probably renew. The fact that they don't is probably the major reason that I'm done. The league and the department have relegated the attending fan to a position below the dollar quest. I will still root and sometimes pace the room in a close game but some wind has gone out of the sails. Nothing is forever.

I guess I need to hope that Stanford keeps finding Golden Geese (Generous mega donors) because it doesn't look like the "average" Stanford fan is fully aware of the D1 economics.  The mega donors have given so much, for so long that the average fan has at best a limited understanding of the prevailing D1 business model used by other successful ADs.

Stanford allows fans to attend most sports for free.  Same for students.  Now a very small group is asked to pay something close to, but still below, Pac-12 average required donations rates for similar seats to watch less successful teams, and people scream betrayal.

If/when those mega donors stop donating I fear my Stanford AD will discover a level of entitlement and expectation in its fan base that will mean the current level of success is no longer sustainable.

Long Live the Mega Donors.  God Save the Mega Donors.
