The men's tennis team's season ended in a Round of 16 loss to #1 Wake Forest, but Tom Fawcett's season isn't done yet. He's the #8 seed in the men's singles tournament, which started on May 24. He won his first and second round matches in straight sets, and today faced #9-16* seed Florian Lakat from Cal for the third time this year. The first time they met this season, Fawcett won 7-6, 6-4, but Lakat won the second round in three sets. Today, Fawcett won the rubber match 7-5, 7-5, to move into the quarterfinals. His reward? The winner between #3 seed Petros Chrysochos from Wake Forest and Oklahoma's Alex Ghilea. Here's hoping it's Ghilea, because Chrysochos bludgeoned Fawcett 6-2, 6-0 in the team tournament.Â
In any event, by securing a top 16 seed, Fawcett already locked in his All-American honors for the year. (Players on both the men's and women's side earn All-American honors in singles by either being a top 16 seed in the singles tournament, by making the round of 16 in the tournament, or by being ranked in the Top 20 in the final singles rankings.) That may be it for Stanford's tennis players, as none of the women were seeded in the tournament or made it to the round of 16. Melissa Lord has an outside shot at the Top 20, though, given her strong performance in the NCAA tournament (she was #28 in the last rankings but went undefeated and beat the 18th, 23rd, and 67th-ranked players during the team tournament and beat #36 in the individual tournament before falling to #6 Woolcock).Â
* Note: In the NCAA tennis tournament, once the top 8 players are seeded, the next 8 players are jumbled together in a tier of "9-16" rather than being assigned specific seeds in that range.Â
