In all my time on this planet, I have never heard a woman\'s kidney stone story.  Never heard OF a woman with a kidney stone story.  Logic says they must be out there,  but I\'ve never heard of one.  Maybe, like the Republicans stonewalling every piece of legislation, women have a pact that no one complains about pain of anything but childbirth, so to keep intact their headlock on noble suffering.



Oh, and don\'t accept for one second jacketree\'s feeble attempt to pass off a crumb of bran muffin as a kidney stone.  You can tell it\'s fake by the lack of rotating knife blades and hydraulically thrusting needles.

And the really dark side of kidney stones.  Peeing into a little strainer funnel so to catch the little devil when it decides to abandon ship.  This might happen after your return to, say, the workplace.  This also might involve washing the device in the restroom and having to answer questions about why you\'re washing that cute little single-cup "tea strainer"  in the restroom rather than in the coffee/breakroom down the hall.

Well, I\'m completely taken aback by the turn this thread has taken. All I can say is, (1) I\'ve never had a kidney stone, so don\'t chalk my silence on the subject up to omerta; and (2) if I had to choose between having a baby and passing a kidney stone, I know which one I\'d choose. Even with the cost of college tuition these days.

Toward the end of the war Lee was mentally exhausted.  Current diagnosticians would have said he was suffering from clinical depression.   At one key battle in N. Virginia Lee lay in his tent saying "We must strike a blow...We must strike a blow"  but his inability to take command, or even appear on the battlefield let a partially trapped Union army escape to fight again.  

That never would have happened if Lee\'d been on Prozac....or had a couple of toots of meth.  

Actually, Lee probably lucked out that he didn\'t have a kidney stone.  By the battlefield medical standards of the day,  the docs would have simply amputated the what was hurting,  which in this case would have been the lower half of his entire body.

Nancy raises the interesting question.  When I strained my first stone (a humiliating act in itself even if no one was watching.  No one was watching, right?) after a week of saying she could no longer hold the pain of childbirth over me, I proudly showed her the jagged rock of pain.  She calmly went into our bedroom, pulled down the picture of our two beautiful children, held it next to my stone and said, "I win."

Are those mine-like things actually kidney stones?  Given that stones are supposed to be mineral crystals, the smooth appearance is kind of odd.  And noting the micrograph of sharp edges, yes, those edges are very crystalline...pass the cranberry juice and water, please.

Is this an inevitable part of my future storyline or can I duck this scene?
