What? ESPN surely expects both Stanford and UCLA to be ranked teams that game.

The 7:30PM slot is really the second best Pac-12 game of the week. Washington State vs. Boise State had this same slot on Saturday. It was not a low profile game, given the world of week #2 cupcakes many top teams schedule.
However, thanks to Wazzu's air attack style, Wazzu trailing until late (meaning they were never going to run ever) and OT the game did not end until 11:30PM Pacific. ESPN joked about it, but at least the game got close enough to be entertaining. It probably would have ended around 11:15PM even if Wazzu lost in a 38-17 type game.
I suspect ESPN actually prefers Stanford to take that 7:30PM slot because Stanford's power style will reliably get the game completed before 11PM Pacific which is a weekend SportsCenter time slot.

Yeah, sadly 7:30pm is "good news" for Stanford -- presumably it means a network wants to broadcast to a national audience. Perhaps disappointing because UCLA may be resurgent and UCLA's brand usually gives it the potential to get a 5pm slot.
It was last year's team with 3 losses fairly early in the season that led to early kickoff times like 12:30, 1 and 2:30 because nobody wanted to broadcast them nationally so we got good Pac-12 slots.
I used to dream that maybe Stanford could become a strong enough national brand to get those mid-afternoon kickoff times that UCLA and USC sometimes get. But even during the Andrew Luck era -- with a marketable superstar -- the best the team seemed to get were national broadcasts with 5pm kickoffs.
Now we already have *4* games this year with 7/7:30pm kickoff times. In 2015 we ended up with 7 games with 7/7:30 kickoffs -- and a 9AM kickoff! Hopefully the networks/conference don't screw us for Reunion and Big Game, and one good thing about Notre Dame is that we usually get a good start time (4-5pm). Thank goodness Central Time is 2 hours ahead.
At least the weather should be pretty decent at 7:30pm in late September, especially with the hot year we're having. Last year's Rice game at 5pm in late November was miserable.
