A few things particularly interested or surprised me:
1) The team seemed pretty healthy to me (based on its injury list), but when Coach Shaw mentioned how helpful the 2 half-byes would be, he used David Bright as an example, then added, Bright was one of the only people who was completely healthy. I don't know if that's the O Line or the team generally, but it just goes to show how banged up a team gets at this point of the season. Even Stanford, that appears to be relatively unscathed, is far more banged up than the injury list would reveal.
2) A reporter asked how Stanford stays so healthy / less injured, and whether Turley played a role. Shaw said Turley's approach does play a role, and he mentioned that this is a technique many others use including NFL teams. He also mentioned the trainers, and not just post-injury treatments but pre-injury training to avoid injury.
3) I was impressed by how important David Bright is for the line and in particular, in last Saturday's performance. It seems Little became unavailable just the morning of the game, so they put Hamilton in, then Hamilton went down, so they could move over Bright and bring in Fanaika. Being able to plug in an experienced, knowledgeable leader wherevever needed -- even moving him around during the game -- was critical to ensure the O Line can play a prepared, best 5 regardless of 1 or 2 injuries. We're definitely going to miss Bright next year (RS SR).
4) I wasn't very familiar with Curtis Robinson's backstory and Shaw spoke of him so glowingly, it comes off like the second coming of Shayne Skov (except at the outside). Apparently, Robinson's ceiling is so high, Shaw says maybe Curtis doesn't even know or realize how high his ceiling is. And Shaw said he's just scratching the surface of his potential, and only now starting to use the speed he has. It'll be exciting to see him continue to grow. It also made me think Robinson is why Alfieri got moved to IL.
4b) Also, he indicated Alexander, Mustafa Branch or both are expected to come back soon. Glad to hear, I was beginning to worry if their injuries could be long-lasting.
5) Last, I assumed when the team had a half-bye week, they'd be using all that time scheming new stuff for Wazoo and UW, which maybe they're doing a little bit. But Shaw talked not only about time to get healthier, but also time to just get away and be able to refresh themselves psychically and socially. I knew physical recovery was important, but it sounds like they'll spend even more time away from football than I would've thought. Get to go enjoy a weekend on campus!
