1. Mills. I don’t generally like to see a pre-determined series for the back up. But I’d make an exception here. Put him in series 3. Hopeful he gets to play a lot in second half.
2. Someone, anyone not named JJ or Irwin make some plays at WR
3. Scarlett over 100. And more importantly passing the eye test. Who knows how long Love is out. Scarlett showed he is capable last year. Time to show he’s more than capable.
4. The defense has faced two fairly “traditional “offenses. Now they get an up-tempo spread team. Good. They are going to see that in Pac-12 play. Starting next week. UCD has put up big numbers. Obviously they ain’t Oregon. But a different type of test. Keys - being able to pressure QB and avoiding long runs/big plays.
5. Costello improved accuracy. Watch the YAC. It has not been a Stanford strength. Part of that is scheme issues. Part, IMO, is not hitting a receiver in stride. Here is a stat I heard: in 2017 every TD pass was caught in the end zone. That sounds impossible in today’s game to me. But it was mentioned in SC broadcast. Now that’s changed in ‘ 18 with JJ’s long TD vs SDS. But that was because defender fell while trying to break up pass. Accuracy to me means two things: can he put a short route where he hits the runner in stride. And can he throw a receiver open. Costello has shown he can do a lot of good things. But I’ve yet to see high end accuracy. If he starts showing that, he goes from being a very good college QB to an elite college QB.
